Meningitis Outbreak: Advice on Vaccine Status
What is Meningitis?
Meningitis is an infection and swelling of the meninges (protective lining of the brain and spinal cord). Unfortunately, it can be very serious if not treated promptly and can cause life-threatening sepsis with permanent damage to the brain or nerves.
What are the symptoms of meningitis?
Symptoms can develop suddenly and can include:
- Fever (high temperature)
- Severe headaches
- Stiff neck
- A dislike of bright lights
- Drowsiness or unresponsive
- Fits (seizures)
- A rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (but a rash will not always develop)
If you or anyone you know develops any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately by contacting a GP, calling NHS 111 or dialling 999 in an emergency. Knowing the signs and taking early treatment can be lifesaving.
Vaccines
MenACWY. This is offered to teenagers in school but can be given by the GP surgery up to the age of 25 years old if it's been missed.
MenB. Children are offered 3 doses of the MenB vaccine as part of the NHS vaccination schedule at 8 weeks old, 12 weeks old and at 1 year old. This was added to the schedule for those born on or after 1st July 2015.
Eligible for vaccines
We can offer a MenACWY vaccine up to 25 years of age if they did not receive one at school around year 9.
The MenB vaccine can be offered up to the age of 2 years old on the NHS (and over if asplenia, splenic dysfunction or complement disorders present).
Unfortunately, other age groups wishing for this vaccine would need to seek their own arrangements privately.
We are constantly monitoring for new government information for any changes.
The government have offered a targeted vaccination programme to a select population only in Kent and Canterbury.
The MenB vaccine is a private vaccine, some pharmacies offer this vaccination, and the estimated cost is between £110 to £200 for a single booster.
